A Busy Weekend for The Mighty Haven

On Sat 28th Oct we had the honour of hosting 3 rounds of Section Play by 4 Sections for the Bowls North Harbour Ladies Fours Championships and on Sunday we had our own annual McNair Rosebowl Tournament for Drawn Pairs.

Saturday provided an excellent day’s bowling in the Ladies Fours despite the damp start but a slow improvement of conditions bought us some stunning results. The Teams who progressed to Sunday’s Post Section Play were Birkenhead, Browns Bay, Northcote & Helensville. The Browns Bay team skipped by Elaine McClintock eventually took out the title in the final that was played Sunday 29th at Milford.

The Mens Fours played over the weekend at other venues resulted in a win for a Browns Bay Team skipped by Tony Grantham, a former NZ Singles Champion and World and Commonwealth Games representative.

Our Sunday saw the annual McNair Rosebowl Tournament event which, despite a number of members being absent or on holiday and unpromising weather, bought out a good field and was played under clearing skies in the morning followed by a beautiful spring afternoon. Whilst some of the bowling wasn’t quite up to the standard we had witnessed on Saturday, some of it was excellent, and as usual, the humour and fellowship of the Club was outstanding. All competitors enjoyed a wonderful day in the fresh air followed by a social hour or so in the Clubhouse afterwards. It was one of those days where no-one wanted to be the first to go home.

There are always winners and losers, even on a day like this, and the Rosebowl was eventually prized from the Presidential and First Lady’s fingers (they won it last year) and presented with the usual acclamation to David Hilson and Rick Markovina for their 3 Wins and a Draw from 4 games. The Presidential team of Don Tesoriero and Richard Ponting were runners up with 2 Wins, a Draw and a Loss.
