Club Championship Junior Singles

Our Club Championship Junior Singles was played on Saturday morning 15th October and on a beautifully clear and bright morning in both the Women’s and Men’s sections. This is a competition for bowlers with 5 or less year’s experience as Full Playing members and often brings out the latent talents of competitors in a big way. This year was no exception and despite family and other commitments limiting a full field of our Junior bowlers, the quality of the bowling we witnessed was of a very high standard with the finals going down to wire in the Men’s section and in the Women’s section going to a third game.

In the Women’s section, Gloria Markovina came back after being 1 game down in the best of 3 format to win 2 games to 1 over Lyn Davis. This was a finely balanced match with both players holding sway at various times, but the outcome was not certain until towards the end of the third game when Gloria’s year or two extra experience came to the fore and she pulled away in the last few ends.

The Men’s section was equally close with Garry Denley, Ian Davis and Darrin McLay vying for a spot in the Final match. Some great bowling during the preliminary round games saw both Ian Davis and Darrin McLay fight out close matches with Garry and the Final game itself had a number of twists and turns with the lead changing hands several times. It was eventually won by Darrin taking a rare 3 point end, leap-frogging Ian and winning 21-20.

Our President, Roy Parker, being away representing the Club in the RSA National Championship 4s in Blenheim, our Past Club Captain, Ian Little, presented the Cups to both successful finalists commenting on the very high standard play all round and the superb quality of the green that had been prepared by Brendon Kelly and Mo Pita for the day.

Once again our members had been treated to another great day at The Haven which drew to a close with a convivial hour or two in the sunshine on the Deck.

Club Membership is open to all, and we have opportunities for those interested in learning to play bowls available on Tuesday evenings and Thursday afternoons, all equipment and coaching supplied. Details are available on our Website or you can leave a message by phone on 482 0338 and we will get back to you. The Club is set in beautifully wooded surroundings in Shepherds Park, so come and try out one of the friendliest Bowling Clubs on The Shore and put some good company, fun and fresh air back into your life!
