On yet another bright and warm Saturday we held our Club Championship Triples Tournament for both our Ladies & Mens Membership Trophies. As we have become accustomed, our green was running beautifully thanks to the care with which Brendon Kelly and Mo Pita taken with it for over a year now. The turnout for the day comprised a good mix of experienced and not so experienced members, which made it an interesting spectator sport for those members who had byes in the earlier rounds.
Unfortunately, due to other commitments, the Ladies field was a little reduced, but the competition was close enough to require a final game play-off which was effectively decided by one point scored with the penultimate bowl in the last of 15 ends. The ladies might have been light in numbers, but the quality of play was not diminished with some of our newer members contributing some fine play to the entertainment. The result was that Lyn Davis & Gloria Markovina, skipped by Sandra Hilson, took out the final by that one point in the 15th end over the experienced team of Eileen Ponting & Nola Glenn, skipped by Pam Bostock.
The Men’s Competition comprised two sections with the winner of each going forward to the final. Again the bowling was of a high standard with some of the more experienced players having to pull out all the stops to get through the early rounds. Unfortunately, the Champions for the last two seasons, Gareth Towler and Jason Blackmore, but minus their usual third player, Dave Hunter, did not progress quite as far this year leaving the door open for a change of the guard. The final outcome saw the highly experienced team of President Roy Parker & Steve Doolan skipped by Damon Pierson, take out the final over a valiant effort from Rick Markovina & Andrew Wilson, skipped by Ian Little. It was a great final showcasing some very high standards of play and was much enjoyed by all spectators.
It is a great pleasure to have Damon Pierson and a number of other experienced bowlers join the Club during the last 12 months and this can only help raise the skill levels of all our members.
The day concluded with our usual social activities, including some good Haven Humour, in the sunshine on the deck. A great way to finish a great day.
