The RSA National Bowls Tournament was held at Blenheim over three days the 17-19th October.
Birkenhead RSA sponsored four teams.
After the first two days the top sixteen teams were identified. Three Birkenhead teams qualified skipped by Kevin Sturgeon, Geoff Darby and Sandy Cleghorn.
The team skipped by Sandy was basically a Beach Haven side with Steve Doolan and President Roy with Sandy an Associate member of the club.
After the first two days the team did not perform that well and only just qualified in 15th position on the back of a good differential. On the third day the team turned there form around and all bowled far better with Roy leading from the front and Steve and Sandy putting the icing on the cake. In the final they beat a strong Nelson side 13-4 and walked away as National champions.
So it can be said that a Beach Haven team under the Birkenhead RSA umbrella won the Nationals.......well done team.
